1. Overview

PageMarkdown ("we", "us", or "our") operates the PageMarkdown browser extension and the website at pagemarkdown.com. This privacy policy explains our data practices for both.

The short version: Captured page content and extension settings stay on your device. Optional Pro activation processes a verified Google email and Paddle purchase records without creating a PageMarkdown account or storing an identity database. The website uses Google Analytics as disclosed below.

2. Data Collection

PageMarkdown does not collect browsing history, captured page content, device fingerprints, or hidden usage telemetry from the extension. Online processing occurs only for features you choose:

  • Pro activation receives your Google-verified email and identity subject through Google OAuth, then checks Paddle customer and transaction records for that exact email.
  • The licensing service returns a short-lived signed entitlement and does not maintain a PageMarkdown user, device, or email database.
  • Contact-form submissions are processed by Web3Forms.
  • The public website uses Google Analytics and may display advertising, as described in our Cookie Policy.
  • We do not collect or transmit content you capture with the extension.

3. Data Storage

Extension-generated settings and state are stored on your device using browser local storage. This includes:

  • Extension settings and preferences
  • Custom templates and site rules
  • Language preference
  • AI API configuration (base URL, API key, model name)
  • A short-lived signed Pro entitlement and its last refresh time, when Pro is activated

Captured content and these local settings are not uploaded to PageMarkdown. Google and Paddle process the identity and purchase information needed for optional Pro activation under their own policies.

4. AI Features

PageMarkdown offers optional AI-powered Markdown refinement. When you use this feature:

  • You provide your own API key for an OpenAI-compatible service
  • Captured content is sent directly from your browser to the API endpoint you configure
  • We never see, store, or transmit your content or API keys
  • All AI communication happens between your browser and your chosen API provider

The AI provider you choose has its own privacy policy that governs how it handles your data.

5. Chrome Extension Permissions

PageMarkdown requests the following browser permissions, each with a specific purpose:

  • activeTab — Access the current tab's content when you click the extension icon, required to capture and convert the page to Markdown
  • storage — Save your preferences, templates, and settings locally on your device
  • downloads — Save captured Markdown files, DOCX, EPUB, PDF, and screenshots to your downloads folder
  • contextMenus — Add right-click menu items for quick capture actions
  • scripting — Inject content scripts into pages for element selection and batch capture
  • identity — Open Google's secure authorization flow when you choose to buy, activate, or refresh Pro

No permission is used for data collection or tracking purposes.

6. Third-Party Services

6.1 AI API Services

When you configure an AI API endpoint, your browser communicates directly with that service. We are not a party to that communication and do not process, store, or forward any data between you and the API provider.

6.2 Google OAuth

When you choose a Pro purchase or activation action, Google authenticates your account and provides PageMarkdown's stateless licensing service with a verified email, stable account subject, and signed identity token. PageMarkdown requests only openid and email; it does not request Gmail, Drive, contacts, or other Google product data.

6.3 Paddle

Paddle processes PageMarkdown Pro payments and acts as merchant of record. The licensing service uses your verified email to read matching Paddle customer, transaction, and adjustment records and determine whether a qualifying purchase remains active. Receipts, billing history, and payment details remain with Paddle.

6.4 Web3Forms

Our contact form uses Web3Forms to process submissions. When you submit the contact form, your name, email address, and message are sent to Web3Forms' servers. Consult Web3Forms' privacy policy for their data practices.

6.5 Google Analytics and advertising

The public website uses Google Analytics to measure visits and may use Google advertising services. These services may process device, browser, approximate location, referral, and interaction information and may use cookies. See our Cookie Policy for details and opt-out information.

6.6 Donations

Our donate page is hosted at pagemarkdown.com/donate/. Any transactions or interactions on third-party payment processors are governed by their own privacy policies.

7. Website (pagemarkdown.com)

The website is publicly accessible and does not host a PageMarkdown login or account dashboard. It uses analytics, advertising, and the contact form as described above. Pro authentication begins inside the browser extension and is handled on Google's secure pages.

8. Children's Privacy

PageMarkdown is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children.

9. Your Rights (GDPR / CCPA)

Depending on your location, you may have rights to access, correct, delete, restrict, or object to processing of personal information. Most extension data can be removed by deactivating Pro, clearing extension storage, or uninstalling the extension. Google, Paddle, Web3Forms, and Google Analytics provide separate controls for information they process.

10. Changes to This Policy

We may update this privacy policy from time to time. Changes will be posted on this page with an updated "Last updated" date. If our data practices change materially, we will notify users through the extension or website.
